I'm talking real scary shit. Visceral horror.
I'm looking for movies that scare the shit out of you without relying on jumpscares or over the top gore.
The last decent one I saw was Crimson Peak, but it wasn't amazing you know? I feel like real modern horror is kinda hard to find.

Well A Nightmare on Elm Street to this day scared me most, but it isn't my favorite "good" horror film. Good is subjective, but in the sense I think you mean I'd probably go with Halloween(1978)

IMO if a horror movie has to rely on unexpected sounds/imagery to make you jump in your seat or blood spraying everywhere it's not good, y'know? I like the stuff that gives you a cold sweat and leaves you glancing at the closet door and wondering if you heard a sound outside the window just by what the story implies.

I posted the original HIlls Have Eyes in here somewhere. That was a very eye-opening movie for me.
That and most of Romero's stuff. Martin. Jack's Wife. The Living Dead movies.
Return Of the Living Dead is also just - a fun ride that I found pretty inspiring.
Since I started doing this board, I'm finding some INSANELY awesome looking trailers for new horror movies that I can't wait to see.
I guess Cronenberg is another one. Most of his movies I think helped guide my young mind.

I like the Hammer movies with Lee and Cushing. Phantasm Suspiria One Missed Call (original, not the remake)

Hmm, I love me some french horror, so for me it's Martyrs.
Yeah, Crimson Peak was okay, it was pretty, I guess.
The Conjuring 2 was actually good, so there's that one too (amongst more recent ones).

Nightmare on Elm Street is a good classic. Some very creepy ass scenes where it plays with the power that imagination brings to making Freddy scary.
Ju-on: The Grudge was a great film when I first saw it, and had a ton of moments where they create a creepy build-up to Kayako and Toshio attacking folks.
I've got a soft spot for the Scream series, but that's just cause I'm a big movie buff so I find it to be funny how they use the horror movie mechanics to play around with it. You can tell Craven wanted to have fun with the movies and in the process created something that's both funny and very unsettling.
I know there's some good movies recently that are supposed to be creepy like The Witch, Babadook, and It Follows, but I haven't come across them and have been too skiddish to try Babadook until maybe this October.

Babadook was done nicely; it isn't too scary if that's what you're worried about.
Ooo I forgot about IT Follows, that one was great too. I could see that movie as a TV series.
The Witch was OKAY. I should have went into watching that one with lower expectations.

I really enjoyed The Conjuring and Insidious. Insidious had some issues, but it was unique. Conjuring was just really well put together and acted.
I agree that modern horror sucks. People seem to have forgotten what horror truly is, it's not soft tortureporn. =\

I should also say that - most horror movies don't really "scare" me. I can get swept up in a moment maybe. But - I tend to more be into just the "ride" aspect. How the action moves the story and how the creepy elements blend in with it.
House of 1000 Corpses I thought was super fun. It had some dark stuff in it. But - like my reaction to it was just - that it was fun to watch. Engaging on lots of different levels. Comedic, dramatic, and strange.
I like movies like that.
I do remember that I saw a movie on TV when I was a kid called "Don't Be Afraid Of the Dark" which legitimately scared me. Like "didn't want to turn out the light that night" type scared me.
Most of the time though, especially after all this time, my emotions don't mix in quite so heavily when I'm watching horror movies. It's more about having fun than giving myself over to that. Which I think can also be fun in its way. It's just easier for me to have fun with a horror movie than to sort of give myself over to it intellectually and emotionally to the point where - like I'm haunted by it afterwards. Where it actually effects my psyche and has me looking over my shoulder the next day or something.

oh yeah there was another super old movie I saw as a kid called "the Night Walker" which wasn't even that great a horror movie. But there are some scenes where Barbara Stanwyk is confronted by this image of her dead husband that were lingeringly creepy for me at that age.

Ditto, which is why I love the Friday the 13th franchise so much, Jason Lives being one of my all-time favorite horror movies.

yeah and you know, for the longest time I always thought I hated that franchise. But - and yet every time I watched one of the Friday the 13ths I enjoyed it.
I finally put that demon to rest a few Halloweens ago when I watched them all in a couple marathon sessions and it was super fun.

Pin just popped into my head for a second. not sure why. It's a strange little movie.
the original "Maniac".
Ooooh I forgot about "Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things" that was another movie I saw as a kid on just regular old network tv of all places.
I need to think of some newer ones. My mind always goes to classics first.

I'm not sure if this counts, but I think Alien works very well as a horror movie. Creepy atmosphere of dark, confined spaces with nothing around but blinking lights and killer aliens. I'd rank it up there with Elm Street and Ju-On.

Alien is absolutely a horror film, and a great one. Plus it gave us this:
Aliens I consider action however.

The first Alien is definitely horror, Aliens is more of an action film. And who cares about the other sequels.

Return of the living dead was a good one . The crazies remake wasn't horrible either. Event horizon, the original Phantasm, I have a pretty big list.

Stir Of Echoes, The Exorcist, Halloween, Carrie (1976), The Craft, Scream (both The Craft and Scream released in '96 and had both Skeet Ulrich and Neve Campbell in them) A Nightmare On Elm Street (1984), The Puppet Masters, Child's Play, the original The Amityville Horror, The Omen, It, The Shining, Gremlins, Critters, American Psycho, ummm...
I really can't think off the top of my head, right now. Those are only a few, that come to mind.

I doubt that its 'good' but i love the gore in cabin fever....
it was more grotesque than anything else...but a more believable scare...
for someone to catch and spread a flesh eating disease in an area of poorer health conditions, could be lethal....
i think thats what i look for in a horror....i mean outer worldly stuff is fun but when you can find one thats dangerously close to a possibility....good stuff
