Most people have probably never hear of it and instead of myself trying to hodge podge my way through an explanation, I'll quote from their WEBSITE. This may also come in handy for artists who want to participate in future competitions or people interested in making trips in years to come. If you are in or around Michigan, I highly suggest you look into attending this event. A day, a week, there is plenty enough to see and experience in that amount of time. Plus delicious food and breweries abound! Anyways...
At some point during the event, I will be spending multiple days there taking in the art and festivities. I usually try to take photos of those which you can (which is most actually) and I found pleasing. So I will also try to post those here as well, along with any artist statement that goes along with it.
If you have any questions about the event, please feel free to leave them below. This is an event that I have been attending/occasionally volunteering for since the start and because of certain circumstances with being tied to people involved both past and present, can find the answers for you.
"ArtPrize® is a radically open, independently organized international art competition and a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.
ArtPrize is recognized as the most-attended public art event on the planet according to The Art Newspaper, and was recently highlighted in The New York Times’ 52 Places To Go in 2016.
For 19 days in the early fall, around 400,000 attendees descend upon three square miles of downtown Grand Rapids, Michigan where anyone can find a voice in the conversation about what is art and why it matters. Art from around the world pops up in every inch of downtown in over 160 venues—museums, galleries, bars, restaurants, theaters, hotels, public parks, lobbies, buildings, walls, bridges, laundromats, and auto body shops—and it’s all free and open to the public.
It’s unorthodox, highly disruptive, and undeniably intriguing to the art world and the public alike."
