The next entry in the Civilization franchise launches on October 21, 2016.
At its base, the game builds off the successes of Civ V; however, it departs in many significant ways. Most notably, cities have been "unstacked." Previously, your cities occupied individual tiles on the board map, and you built buildings in those cities. These buildings were divided into trees based on their purpose. For example, there were military buildings, science buildings, cultural buildings, economic buildings, growth buildings, production buildings, happiness buildings, and religious buildings. In the new game, each of those categories of buildings is now built within individual district tiles outside of the city center; for example, a science campus or a military encampment. Strategic decisions resulting from this change include terrain bonuses for district placement, tactically offensive assaults on specific districts, and strategically defensive district placement. In addition, world wonders are now built on individual tiles rather than inside the city, adding a new strategic challenges and sacrifices to amassing world wonders.
Other notable changes, among others, include unit stacking between military and support units in battle, a new civics tree parallel to the traditional science/tech tree and new government system which together replace the social policies of Civ V, trade caravans are now the primary method of building roads in the early eras, a much more in-depth city state system by which you can ally with city states and reap the rewards, religious warfare, and a new religious victory condition. Unfortunately, the diplomatic victory of Civ V: BNW is not in the base game. The developers have stated that the World Congress is a response to the meta-game as it develops, and there can't be a meta-game until the game is released; we will most likely see its return in a future expansion.
