Widely considered to be the first science fiction film. When A Trip to the Moon was made film actors performed anonymously and no credits were given, the practice of supplying opening and closing credits in films was a later innovation. The director claimed that his inspiration for this film came from a couple of popular books of that era, Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon and H. G. Wells' The First Men in the Moon.
