so, in an effort to keep up w/all the new anime, ima start an elimination bracket/ongoing review thing.
how it'll work: Each post I'll watch two new anime episodes. One of the two (whichever I like most) will advance to the next round.
round 1 part 1: Bloodivores episode 1 Vs Cardfight! Vanguard G Next episode 1

Bloodivores Vs Cardfight! Vanguard G Next
Not a difficult choice this first round. Bloodiverse was interesting, tense, and well animated. Cardfight is obviously intended for a younger audience and gets pretty bogged down in the card/gaming elements. Some of the fights could be cool, and have some bursts of neat animation. But aside from a sort of quaint nostalgic feeling for game/toy related anime, and a few decent action snips (no single sequence ever quite measures up, as they tend to be full of distracting "points" graphics and cutaways to the game table where people are playing the cards themselves.
Bloodiveres runs away with it. It starts off fast paced and does a decent job of maintaining that pace while also introducing the world and characters. I was pretty psyched after the first episode of Bloodivores for more episodes.
Cardfight left me kinda cold.
Bloodiverse advances.

Much tougher choice here. Tiger Mask W is fantastic. It has a wonderful oldschool feel to it, very "baki-like". Very entertaining. I'll definitely continue watching this.
Shuumatsu No Izetta is just plain amazing though. The story is complex and interesting, the visuals are spectacular.
Tiger Mask W is great. I love it. But in the end, it's really no match for Shuumatsu no Izetta, which is a much more intricate and complex thing. Still, Tiger Mask W is blugdeoningly old school in the best possible way and one of my favorite new anime.
Shuumatsu no Izetta advances.

The new Digimon is a great little anime for kids. Very full and rich world. But it is a kids anime still. While I can sort of find entertainment in just about any anime, I definitely gravitate (being an adult n all) toward more mature storylines.
New Season of IBO is full of characters, action, and awesome visual action sequences.
Mobile Suit Gundam IBO Season 2 advances.

Monster Hunter Stories is gorgeous and not quite so overwhelmingly visually busy as some of the other kid-aimed monster collector anime mentioned so far. The world feels both more solid and more fantastical than the other shows. The additional CG effects scenes are well done and mix with the other more traditional styles, and remind me a little of Zoids, which I used to love.
Time Bokun is a bit messier. Some neat little sequences, and definitely doesn't take itself too seriously. But ultimately it's a bit of a mess. It has some fun little ideas in it, and is pretty cool in its goofy little way. Ultimately though, it's one of those anime that never quite seems to pull itself together into anything too coherent. It's a goofily entertaining little anime. But not great.
Monster Hunter Stories advances.

so this one turned out to be tougher than I thought going in. I fully expected All Out! to be an easy throwaway and thought I'd really like Brave Witches.
Turns out, while All Out! is indeed fairly formulaic, it's also quite a bit more focused than Brave Witches.
animation-wise, it's Brave Witches hands down. Some awesome sequences.
But, I could not get past, as is the case with a lot of anime - the ridiculous amount of fanservice injected into the mix with Brave Witches - which is about little girl witches going to school to defend humanity against evil aliens.
Literally almost no characters seem to wear anything but panties.
like ever.
They're all decked out from the waste up. But then - apparently there is no need for anything - well, I guess some super short skirts.
And, in some anime, the fanservice doesn't really bother me that much. But with this - it really does seem to aspire to a certain height with its story and pretty nifty visual imagery. It feels super out of place in this for a number of reasons (the age of the characters, the dramatic nature of the storyline, and the otherwise fantastic visual choices).
What could have been a pretty top-drawer anime for me, I found that I couldn't get into just because of the constant sort of "underage panty sniffer" vibe it gave off far too often.
All Out! also has some similar stuff tossed in, but only fleetingly, and the anime itself has a sillier vibe, so it seems more at home. Also it's doesn't hit you over the head/constantly assail you with it in the aggressive way I felt Brave Witches did.
so, surprising even myself:
Ima give it to All Out!

Part of the cool thing about doing this with new anime is, I don't know what I'm getting into before I watch it. Which I kinda like. I'm only passing familiar at most with any of these. So it's fun to explore.
Cheating Craft is bogged in narration. It feels like something that's like half done and they thought injecting a narration track maybe would salvage it? or something. I don't know. But the narration was fairly boring I thought. And there wasn't a lot of substance to begin with. I felt the narration actually detracted from what little was there.
Trickster was a little scattered, but had some really neat moments and sequences and characters. Leaves a lot of room to grow with future episodes.
Trickster advances.

I enjoyed ClassicaLoid quite a bit. but the action and effects elements, while cool, seemed to take a backseat to wacky roommate antics. Which are okay, just felt a little overbalanced to me toward that.
Touken Ranbu Hanamaru is another time travel show. But the best one I've seen so far this season. Kind of has that drama/comedy balance of something like Bleach. not a ton of action so far, but I like the show. It's pretty middle-of-the-road anime. But comfortable and easy to get into.
Touken Ranbu Hanamaru advances.

To Be Hero has potential and seems ambitious, often dives for the lowest common denominator. But it's not like it's not at home there. Not as good as I'd hoped. Not as terrible as it could have been given how far past the watermark it seems to be diving.
Drifters opens with an awesome and breathtaking battle sequence, with lots of cool violence, and continues to build on that with tension and mystery, exploring its world in an interestingly blunt but artful way. I kind of fell in love with this.
I was kind of expecting big things from both of these. But Drifters delivered.
Drifters advances.

this was another tough first round decision. And another round that surprised me.
started out watching Natsume, wasn't expecting to care. Ended up thoroughly engrossed in it. It has a great mix of charm, darkness, simplicity, complexity, chaos and order. I found it to be quite brilliant. I loved it. And so - obviously, there's no way some girly anime is going to top that right?
so then lightning kinda struck twice. Didn't expect a whole lot from Flip Flappers. It's not exactly the same reaction. Because Flip Flappers is much more straight-forward character-wise than Natsume is. Definitely not quite as complex or dark. but it packs a lot of charm, down to earth humor, warmth, interesting creatures/world elements, and some incredible action sequences.
In the end, have to give the edge to Flip Flappers just because it's a more accessible story, missing some of Natsume's elements, but the Flip Flappers seems to handle its own mix a bit more deftly than Natsume handles its. And there are some animated sequences in Flip Flappers that are pretty spectacular.
Natsume is awesome.
But Flip Flappers advances.

Nanbaka is pretty fun in that "don't ask too many questions, it's just an anime" sort of way. It's full of holes on several levels, but like many anime in this category, it's pretty fun to watch, so who cares? Very much on the lighter side of the spectrum (in spite of it being set in a prison) with the bulk of the intent being comedic.
Occultic; Nine is the opposite. Pretty dark, dramatic and serious, though there is (per the anime handbook) humor in there as well. Given how inventive anime as a genre is, this still had some surprises in store visually as well as story-wise. Just familiar enough to be a comfortable experience, but fresh enough not to be stale.
Nanbaka really is pretty fun, but it just lacked the depth and possibilities presented in Occultic; Nine, which also had visual sequences that Nanbaka wouldn't even attempt.
I recommend Nabaka, it's kinda neat.
But Occultic; Nine advances.
Overall I think it was the better of the two in terms of animation/visuals, plot/story, and possibilities for future episodes.
