I watched the old anime series recently... I was wondering if anyone could explain that "ending" to me.....
It was all normal, and then all kinds of weird stuff happened.

The anime differs slightly from the manga. Are you referring to the Eclipse?

I haven't actually watched all the old Berserk TV series, but that confusion probably reflected how Guts would have felt during the Eclipse.
After Griffith was rescued, he used the behelit, the egg-shaped tchotchke to brand every member of the Band of the Hawk as sacrifices and start an Eclipse so he could ascend as the fifth member of the God Hand. An Eclipse needs to take place at the Interstice, which is where the physical world and Astral Plane meet, and monsters are able to appear. As Guts continues his journey after the Eclipse, he learns more about this, but it isn't until he meets Schierke, an apprentice witch, that a lot of this is spelled out.

Yeah like Eye said, Guts's journey continues after the Eclipse in the manga. Everything leading up to the Eclipse is called the Golden Age Arc, and thats the only part of the story covered in the old anime (and the recent movie trilogy).

Yeah, and unfortunately, the anime continuation, that just finished airing, uses some really derpy CG. But despite that, the show has still been pretty good.

Yeah, I was talking about the eclipse part. It went from awesome battles to demon rape at the snap of a finger.
Do they explain how he escaped Hell? It pretty much ended with him chopping off his own arm and then getting his eye gouged out.

Guts, Casca, and Rickert are carried away from the Eclipse by Skull Knight, which is shown in the manga, but I don't remember if it's shown on the new anime.
