I've been pretty lazy about it, but I have the content, and cover art. Portland, Oregon taught me that I am supposed to be a musician and I've scarcely been happier.

California's central valley has taught me that I'm supposed to be a musician who never makes a career of music. I hate this place.

What is your deal... Solo, band, guitarist, bassist, etc.? Also, we live near each other... I've been here in pdx for about 23 years now. I'm also a musician (and archivist/taper/video maker).

Right now I'm a solo guitarist / singer /songwriter. Ubiquitous. Portland is pretty frickin rad even though I'm post-gentrification.... Been here about three years myself. My favorite coffee shop is moving into the basement of a church because the building we were in has been sold.

Cool. Glad you like it here, Portland is great. I miss the way it was, but it is still a fantastic place to live. I have lost a handful of friends who have had to move away, couldn't afford it anymore. Bummer. Luckily, after being here so long, I still have some great longtime friends. I play several instruments, but guitar has been my main instrument for a long time. Music is the best! . . Good luck with your music, I would check it out....so, when you get stuff out post it here. (question, is your sig Grateful Dead reference?)

(question, is your sig Grateful Dead reference?) I can't afford it either. I haven't had a "real job" in over a year. After I quit, I tried couchsurfing for a while so I could get back on my feet, but I never could stay long enough to get my shit together. I gave up and decided it would be better to be a homeless, penniless troubadour and retain my autonomy of initiative. Shortly thereafter I found the coffee shop. They do music stuffs here all the time. I just hung around and didn't leave until there was an opening and now I'm on this work trade thing that will hopefully become a paid position at the new location. These folk have become a family to me, and I'm done working for people who don't trust me. One of the best summers of my life. I will definitely do that, and yes it is.

I've heard a few people connect "Not all who wander..." with Grateful Dead. What's the connection? As far as I know it's just a Tolkien quote.

DeadHeads, many who wander and are lost, have been using the phrase on all sorts of crap (stickers, pins, shirts, etc.) since the 70's.... Maybe even earlier. I love the Dead, that said they are hit or miss for me. The best of their stuff is incredible, the worst is terrible. I prefer their late 60s stuff above all else.

it's weird that - like art is often at the core of who we are, and yet - so many times in life we actually have to fight against instinctual forces to get it out into the world.
Like I know so many artists who couple up and then it becomes about - providing and mating and those types of instincts.
Maybe it's just about what instinct is stronger in each individual. The instinct to create vs the instinct to procreate. And interestingly, sometimes even just flat out the instinct to survive even.
There are definitely times in my life where - the urge to create definitely trumped all other things.

Couldn't it be a source of inspiration in itself?

sure but it relies much more on things outside of one's control. ie - conceptually speaking it's awesome to be with a partner that supports you in that stuff. But - it genuinely decreases the odds as the circle gets larger in a way. Like, if the need to create is a force, then that force becomes diluted as other needs fill the vessel that contains it. And - as the personal circle expands, the needs that enter the vessel aren't just one's own, but those of others as well.
And sometimes it can enhance it, sometimes it just makes it into something different.
But many variables exist, more and more as the circle expands.
In terms of - material to draw from and expanded perspective that can be good.
In terms of - demands on time and emotional investment, that can be distracting.
Mostly what I feel like I see in the dynamic is - artists hook up, and their partners are supportive during the incubatory phase of the relationship, but then grow more aggressive/demanding about their own needs, which eventually, between those additional pressures and others already extant in the individual creator, the creative stuff tends to be the first thing to get compromised out of the picture.
Not always, but almost always.

So it would be another underdog thing for me to challenge myself with and would be worth a shot at least for a while... Although I've exhausted all of my potentially compatible candidates in my immediate vicinity, so maybe that comes later...
On another note, if you cut yourself off so only your needs are in your vessel, there won't be much material aside from what you've already worked with, which can be fine for refining what you already have, but not good for moving forward with new pieces once the kinks have all been smoothed out... I've spent a lot of time in my life just thinking alone. I can't do without the community I've become a part of, they've been such a rich data vein. Being alone for so long really does stuff to a guy. And the hits keep coming for now... in this state of wanting and not having a relationship...
The step I haven't been taking is recording my songs and compiling them in a dispensable package.

that's actually part of what I want to do with the boards is provide something of a roadmap for people to produce/distribute their own stuff. I actually even have a section for it. But I'm waiting til I can fill it up with useful information before I activate it for the public board.
